Contrasting drivers of sponge and seagrass assemblage composition in an Indo-Pacific seagrass meadow

چکیده
Abstract Sponges are major components of benthic marine ecosystems across the world. However, despite seagrasses being one key in tropical environments, their associated sponge assemblages have been poorly studied. In this study we investigated seagrass and assemblage composition an Indo-Pacific meadow located surrounding Hoga Island Wakatobi National Park, South-east Sulawesi, Indonesia. We examined a continuous meadow, spatially separated into two sites, categorized three zones based on distance to shore: high-shore, middle shore near-reef-flat zones. species richness, abundance both sites. found that was significantly different between sites zones, while not. This suggests ecological drivers. Based our observations, propose adaptation prevailing environmental conditions may be reflected by morphology. Furthermore, ecosystem management strategies should consider drivers distribution patterns as they might differentially affected specific anthropogenic stressors.

Collaboration among sponge species increases sponge diversity and abundance in a seagrass meadow
Sponges stand out among sessile marine animals in the great variety of collaborative associations in which they participate. When intimately associated organisms represent taxa with very different characteristics, the ways in which they might benefit each other are readily apparent. For example, non-sponge partners can provide mobility (e.g. decorator crabs, Stachowicz & Hay 2000), solid stable...
متن کاملContribution of seagrass plants to CO2 capture in a tropical seagrass meadow under experimental disturbance
Coastal vegetative habitats are known to be highly productive environments with a high ability to capture and store carbon. During disturbance this important function could be compromised as plant photosynthetic capacity, biomass, and/or growth are reduced. To evaluate effects of disturbance on CO2 capture in plants we performed a five-month manipulative experiment in a tropical seagrass (Thala...
متن کاملRequiem for an eastern Pacific seagrass bed.
Few papers concerning seagrasses of the eastern Pacific have been published. This paper presents the first ecological data on the seagrass, Ruppia maritima, from a non-lagoonal setting in the eastern Pacific. A 5000 m2 patch formed by R. maritima, at Playa Iguanita, Bahía Culebra, Pacific coast of Costa Rica was studied. Plant density and leaf length of R. maritima were determined along two tra...
متن کاملIndo-Pacific seagrass beds and mangroves contribute to fish density and diversity on adjacent coral reefs
There is a long-standing debate whether mangrove and seagrass habitats in the IndoPacific region function as nurseries for coral reef fishes. We studied the use of all major shallow-water habitat types by juvenile coral reef fish using visual census surveys at 4 islands along the Tanzanian coast (East Africa) and at the island of Grande Comoros (Comoros archipelago). We investigated the value o...
